How Strength Affects Combat Level

Strength contributes to your combat level through the melee formula:

Melee Contribution = 0.325 × (Attack + Strength)

Every 3 Strength levels adds approximately 1 combat level.

💡 Training Tip

Strength determines your max hit. Many players prioritize Strength over Attack because higher max hits mean faster kills and more XP/hour. The "1 Attack many Strength" pure builds exploit this for PvP.

Best Strength Training Methods

Nightmare Zone (Dharok's)

High Level

At high HP with Dharok's, you can reach 100k+ XP/hr. Use absorption potions and rock cake to stay at 1 HP.

Sand Crabs / Ammonite Crabs

AFK

Best for low-mid levels. AFK aggressive monsters with good HP. ~25-45k XP/hr.

Slayer Tasks

Active

Train Strength through Slayer for efficient multi-skill progression and profitable drops.

What is the Strength Skill?

Strength is the combat skill that determines the **maximum damage** you can deal with melee weapons. In OSRS, while Attack ensures you land a hit, Strength ensures that the hit is as powerful as possible.

It is widely considered the most important offensive combat skill for training, as higher max hits lead to faster kills and higher experience rates per hour.

Uses and Max Hit Unlocks

Beyond increasing your damage, Strength is required to wield certain heavy weapons and reach specific area unlocks:

  • **Level 50**: Required for Granite weaponry.
  • **Level 60**: Required to wield Tzharr-ket-om (Obby Maul).
  • **Level 70**: Required for the Abyssal Bludgeon and Dharok's Greataxe.
  • **Combat Questing**: Many quests, like *Dragon Slayer II*, have Strength requirements.
  • **God Wars Dungeon**: Strength is needed to push the boulder to enter the Bandos area.

How Strength Mechanics Work

Your "Max Hit" is calculated using a complex formula that factors in your effective Strength level, your equipment's Strength bonus, and any modifiers from Prayers (like Piety) or Void sets.

Because the game rounds down at several steps in the formula, you often need multiple Strength levels to see a +1 increase in your max hit. This is why "Strength gear" like the Bandos Chestplate or Primordial Boots is so highly valued.

The Evolution of Strength

In the early days of RuneScape Classic, Strength was often overlooked in favor of Attack. However, the discovery of the "one-hit" potential led to the rise of Pures—accounts that keep Defence at 1 while maximizing Strength.

In Old School RuneScape, the "Strength-first" training meta has become the standard for efficiency. Modern gear like the Scythe of Vitur has pushed max hits to levels never seen in the original 2007 era.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I train Strength or Attack first?
Generally, Strength first is more efficient. Higher max hits mean faster kills, which means faster XP overall. The common advice is: get Attack to a weapon tier (e.g., 60 for Dragon), then train Strength.
What's the max hit at 99 Strength?
With max gear, potions, and prayers, you can hit over 70+ with melee. The exact number depends on weapon, equipment strength bonus, and combat style.
How does Strength affect Hitpoints XP?
When training Strength in melee combat, you gain 4 XP per damage dealt to Strength and 1.33 XP per damage to Hitpoints (shared XP). This means your HP will level alongside Strength.
