What is an OSRS Pure?

A "Pure" is a character build in Old School RuneScape designed for PvP (Player vs Player) combat. The core philosophy is to keep the **Defence level at 1** to minimize the character's combat level while maximizing offensive stats (Attack, Strength, Ranged, or Magic).

This creates a character that can deal massive damage compared to other players in the same combat level bracket who have invested levels into Defence.

Uses: Why Build a Pure?

Pures are primarily used for Bounty Hunter, Wilderness pking, and PvP worlds. The high damage-to-combat-level ratio allows for fast-paced combat and high "KO" (Knock Out) potential.

Building a pure also adds an extra layer of challenge to the game, as you must navigate high-level PvM content with 0 defensive bonuses, making every boss encounter a true test of skill.

How Pure Mechanics Work

In the OSRS combat formula, Defence contributes significantly to your combat level. By omitting Defence, pures can have 99 Strength or Ranged while staying below combat level 80.

The "Combat Type" (Warrior, Ranger, or Mage) is critical for pures. You must ensure your offensive styles are balanced so you don't accidentally gain extra combat levels from a secondary style.

A Brief History of OSRS Pures

Puring is one of the oldest traditions in RuneScape, dating back to 2001. In the early days, pures were known for wearing "Phats" (Paper Hats) and dealing massive damage with 2-handed swords.

In Old School RuneScape, the pure meta has become highly refined, with specific builds like the "13 Defence" (for Adamant Gloves) or "20 Defence" (for Mystic/Initiate) becoming popular alongside the classic 1 Defence builds.
