How Attack Affects Combat Level
In OSRS, your Attack level directly contributes to your combat level through the melee calculation:
Melee Contribution = 0.325 × (Attack + Strength)
This means that every 3 Attack levels are roughly equivalent to 1 combat level when training Attack alone (since 3 × 0.325 ≈ 0.975).
💡 Training Tip
Attack determines your accuracy with melee weapons. Higher Attack lets you wield better weapons and hit more consistently. For pure accounts, Attack is often trained to specific breakpoints (50, 60, 75) for weapon tiers.
Want to train Strength instead? Strength increases your max hit, while Attack increases accuracy. See our combat training guide for the best methods at every level.
Best Attack Training Methods
Sand Crabs / Ammonite Crabs
AFKGreat for low to mid levels. Aggressive monsters that stack on you. ~20-40k XP/hr depending on gear.
Nightmare Zone

Slayer
ActiveTrain Attack while doing Slayer tasks. Varies by task, but efficient for overall account progression.
What is the Attack Skill?
Attack is a fundamental combat skill in Old School RuneScape that determines your **accuracy** in melee combat. It measures your character's proficiency with weapons, allowing you to hit your targets more consistently.
Unlike the Strength skill, which increases the maximum damage you can deal, Attack ensures that your damage-dealing potential isn't wasted by missing. A higher Attack level is essential for overcoming the high Defence levels of bosses and other players.
Uses and Key Unlocks
The most important function of the Attack skill is unlocking higher-tier weapons. As you level up, you gain access to more powerful equipment:
- **Level 40**: Rune weapons (the pinnacle of F2P combat).
- **Level 60**: Dragon weapons (unlocked after Lost City).
- **Level 70**: The Abyssal Whip (the most iconic melee weapon).
- **Level 75**: Godswords and the Ghrazi Rapier.
- **Level 80**: Scythe of Vitur and Torva weaponry.
How Attack Mechanics Work
In OSRS, every time you swing a weapon, the game performs an **Accuracy Check**. Your Attack level, combined with your weapon's Attack bonus and any active Prayers or Potions, determines your *Attack Roll*.
This roll is compared against the opponent's *Defence Roll*. If your roll is higher, you hit; if it's lower, you deal a 0. This is why Attack is critical for "bossing" and high-level PvM, where enemies have massive Defence stats.
A Brief History of Attack
Attack has been a core pillar of RuneScape since its launch in 2001 (RuneScape Classic). For most of the game's history, the level cap for weapons was 75.
In OSRS, the meta has evolved to include level 80 and even level 85 requirements for specialized gear. Despite these changes, the fundamental relationship between Attack (Accuracy) and Strength (Damage) remains the core of the OSRS combat system.
